DEM investigation of the effect of particle breakage on compact properties

Particle breakage during compaction affects behavior and the quality of formed compact. This work conducted a numerical study based on discrete element method (DEM) to investigate effect particle dynamics compact properties, including size density distributions, pore properties. A force-based criterion Apollonian sphere packing algorithm were employed characterize behavior. The structures compacts characterized by watershed segmentation method. Calibrated with experimental data, model was able simulate stress-strain relation comparable observation. During compaction, particles gradually broken from top bottom increasing pressure. Both had relatively uniform distribution at larger stress, while decreased sharply when started break, indicating that smaller fragments in system have significant distribution.
